Schlossle Hotel - Tallinn, Estonia

Location Rating: Excellent. Right at the center of Tallinn’s Old Town, and only a few steps away from the main shopping streets and the Town Hall Square.

Lobby Appearance: I was really impressed! As you step across the threshold of this small hotel located within the walls of a historical building, you can feel an atmosphere of old times. The lobby, or the Grand Hall as they call it, is a beautiful and romantic place. Here you can relax and get warm by the fireplace, read some books or look through an album with Picasso’s reproductions (which I really enjoyed!). The whole interior looks like the scenery for a costume drama. I found myself in a noble house of past centuries, surrounded by tapestries and medieval portraits (of its former owners?) on rustic walls, servants in tailcoats (receptionists, actually), and antique furniture.

Room Appearance: Elegant and comfortable. There are 24 rooms and suites in the hotel. All rooms have direct dial/ISDN-lines and modem/fax connection, mini-bar, in-room safe, pay-TV, and even a personal scale in the bathroom. The rooms turned out to be more modern-looking than I expected after seeing the lobby and a restaurant in the cellar. The white color and elegant furniture seem to be a good designer’s idea as it made small rooms look more spacious.

Unfortunately, I saw only standard rooms, since all more expensive and luxurious rooms were booked. They also have rooms for non-smokers, disabled and allergic people.

Hotel Restaurant: There is the Stenhus restaurant in the cellar. Its vaulted ceiling, candles and the huge log fireplace really create the atmosphere of medieval times.

Other Amenities: Laundry and babysitting service. They provide meeting and banquet facilities in the boardroom for up to 14 people. The sauna is available in the cellar. Free parking.

Rates: Standard Single 307, Standard Double 351, Deluxe Single 367, Deluxe Double 406, Junior Suite 503, Suite 629, Schlossle Suite 901, Extra Person in Room 38.

Useful Nearby Businesses: Since the hotel has a great location, you can easily explore the Old Town on your own and find anything you want in the neighborhood. Just let me recommend you walk along St. Catherine Passage. It is lined with small craft shops and restaurants and is surrounded with a medieval atmosphere. The passage connects Vene and Muurihave streets. The Dominican Monastery, the oldest in Tallinn (1246), is also located nearby (Vene 16). And don’t forget to visit Tallinn City Museum (Vene 17).

Would I Stay Here? Definitely! (If I were a celebrity seeking privacy in this small posh hotel).

Staff Speaks English? Sure. (And Russian too!)

Comments: This classy five-style hotel seems to be very popular with celebs. I was shown a plaque on the wall with the names of the rich and famous who stayed there. From this long list I can remember Lord Chancellor of Great Britain, Prince Charles, someone of the Rothschilds, and lots of rock and pop stars: Sting, Whitesnake, Pet Shop Boys, Ritchie Blackmore and Robert Plant.
