Saint Petersburg Hotel J
Remodeled river-view suites are great. www.hotel-spb.ru Peak Season Rates: Standard single with a bad view $60; updated single with a good view $100; updated double with a good view $120; updated luxury suite with a good view $160. Prices include 20% VAT but not the 5% city tax. Breakfast is included. Location Rating: Good. Hotel is located along the Neva River. Interesting views. The Cruiser Aurora is parked very close by. It would probably take you 30 minutes to walk to the SS Peter & Paul Fortress. This is not a heart of the city hotel, but it is within sight. Proximity to Metro: Fair. It's about a 15+ minute walk to Ploshchad Lenina Metro Station. You may have some trouble finding it unless you have a street map. Lobby Appearance: Clean, plain, and a
little dated. The appearance is fine though. Room Appearance: The recently updated rooms with a view of the river are nice. Their updated luxury suite with a river view is really nice and a good value at $160. Useful Nearby Businesses: It's quiet here. Not many stores or cafes immediately around. Hotel Restaurants: It appears they have 2, plus a small bar area in the lobby. One of the restaurants was closed when we visited. The other restaurant was expensive and we felt for the same money we could have a nicer atmosphere and a more satisfying time at many other higher end restaurants in the city. Other Amenities: Internet access for $6.30 per hour in your own little private office. I liked this. Would I Stay Here? Yes, for the luxury suite with a river view! Staff Speaks English? Yes. Comments: This is a large, 70-ish hotel. No pool. No billiards or bowling. They have currency exchange, a post office, and a few souvenir shops. If there is a time when it pours rain and you don't want to leave the hotel, you might get bored rather quickly here. The old rooms are old and the new rooms are much more attractive. I strongly suggest you request a river-view unit. And the luxury suite is a great deal. Very, very nice... especially for the price (book early). The hotel doesn't really have any comfortable hangout places, and there is not much in the area in the way of cafes or interesting shops. If you don't mind walking, you can stroll to the SS Peter & Paul Fortress and make your way to Palace Square from there. Or you can hike 15 minutes to the nearest metro station and that will take you to the heart of the city. For the money, this place is okay as long as you get a river view and an updated room.
