Rates: Brand new double $50. Older room, $12.

Location Rating: Fair. Located in a neighborhood that looks fine, but the metro is far.Photo: Polustrovo Hotel, St. Petersburg, Russia. This hotel is not convenient to the metro and is a bit isolated.

Proximity To Metro: Poor. It is too far. You need to pick up a mini-bus to get to Ploshchad Lenina Metro Station.

Lobby Appearance: Brand new.

Room Appearance: The hotel is undergoing a complete renovation which is expected to be completed by the middle of May 2002. They have a lot of work to do. We saw one new room that was ready for occupants and it was really nice. Everything is new. The bathroom was nice. And the price is just $50... a bargain. They are keeping a small percentage of rooms that are very basic. The cost is $6 per bed with a minimum of 2 people for those rooms.

Useful Nearby Businesses: Down at the corner is a store where you can buy food items. On the other corner you can exchange money.

Hotel Restaurants: They have a small bar/cafe area and a restaurant on the first floor.

Other Amenities: They have plans to offer shuttle service to Nevsky Prospekt. Wake-up calls. Currency exchange. Safety deposit boxes.

Would I Stay Here? Yes - in a new room.

Staff Speaks English? Yes, and they are so pleasant.

Comments: The management of this hotel speaks excellent English and they struck me as very professional with an acute concern for doing all they can to enhance a guest's experience with them. They have 180 rooms with nearly all of them under renovation as of February 2002. They are really putting money into this place. It should be a really nice place when it's finished. They might change the hotel's name.

Polustrovo Hotel Update: January 26, 2004. We took mini-bus 191 to arrive here and it is far from metro station Ploshchad Lenina. The last time I was here 2 years ago, most of the building was under construction. Now it looks much better. They have 16 singles for $90, and 80 doubles for $110. They also have slightly lower quality rooms with 24 singles and 43 doubles with prices in the $45 to $70 range. The hotel also now has a beauty salon, a cafe with tropical design theme, a night club, and a bar on the third floor. Forty more rooms are under renovation and it seems they will be a little more plush. The hotel has no air conditioning. While the bathrooms are nice, the bedrooms make me think "budget hotel." It's clean. It's new. But it's location is not good. This is the weakest thing about this hotel - location. Also, a Polustrovo brochure I picked up says the hotel is "in the historical center of Saint Petersburg." I'm surprised and disappointed they used these words. It is a stretch of the truth in my opinion.
