Street Address: 129 South Second Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

Photo: Thomas Bond House Bed And Breakfast - Philadelphia, PA

Rates: $95 to $175 as of December 2004

Location Rating: Very good. It's an easy walk to the Old City bars and restaurants. Independence Hall is within easy walking distance (maybe 10 or 15 minutes).

Lobby Appearance: Colonial Federal Period theme throughout the facility.

Room Appearance: I saw one room and I didn't like it. The decor just isn't my taste. But there is more to it. At the Shippen Way Inn, which also has a colonial theme, I like the rooms because they have a cozy feel. But here at the Thomas Bond House, the rooms are much taller and larger and it feels lonely.

Useful Nearby Businesses: The US Customs House is across the street. Next door is a parking garage and a movie theater. Also across the street is "City Tavern." This restaurant has the same colonial theme as the Thomas Bond House, plus it really feels like the 1700's there due to costumes/uniforms the staff wear.

Many restaurants, cafes with sidewalk tables, bars are nearby. Penn's Landing is close (Delaware Riverfront).

Hotel Restaurants: None. This is a small 12 room bed and breakfast. They do have a good-sized dining room for when breakfast is served, and this room is also available for rental.

Would I Stay Here? No, because the decor feels lonely and impersonal to me.

Comments: The street outside is a little bit busy. It has a degree of hustle and bustle to it. There is no elevator in this facility and the steps appear steeper than normal. If your room is on the fourth floor, you better be in good physical shape. Old people with heart conditions aren't going to make it.

To get inside, you must ring the doorbell. The person on duty will let you in. To the left is a large room to hang-out in. To the right are two dining rooms with a good amount of space. Every detail here is colonial. There is a kitchen, but you need to ask before you can do anything in there.

It seemed the Thomas Bond House was having a good day. Somebody bought a $100 gift certificate while I was there. Somebody else called on the phone to buy a $150 gift certificate. Apparently all the rooms had been rented out except for one on the day of my visit. Of course, everything I saw was completely clean. And the worker on duty treated me cordially. I hate to say it, but I didn't like it here. And I attribute that solely to the decor. Maybe it's just my taste? The antique look often doesn't appeal to me.
