Phone: 215-925-1919Photo: Society Hill Hotel - Philadelphia, PA

Street Address: 301 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19106

Rates: $100 to $170

Location Rating: It's an excellent location steps away from Independence Hall. There is no shortage of nearby places to eat.

Lobby Appearance: No lobby. You either stand by the door and ring the bell, or go inside the restaurant to get assistance.

Room Appearance: Hmm... well, these are cramped, tiny rooms. I did not consider these rooms to be comfortable. The rooms have VCRs with 13 inch televisions. One of the televisions I saw was ancient. That was a surprise. I think they need to upgrade to sound insulated windows. They let in too much noise from passing buses. One of the rooms I saw had dusty blinds. Other than that, the rooms were clean. But I did not like how everything is so cramped. It's kind of old. Corridors are very narrow. There are 4 floors, but no elevator. One of the rooms had a bathroom light that was too dim. With some rooms you need to walk through the bathroom to get to the bedroom.

Useful Nearby Businesses: Skip over to my review of the Best Western Independence Park for the details on this.

Hotel Restaurants: Downstairs is the Society Hill Bar & Restaurant. It re-opened under new ownership in early January 2005. They say they've got some great chefs. The menu looks pretty fancy but the prices aren't too bad.

Other Amenities: Free wireless internet access. Breakfast is served to your door (included in room rate).

Would I Stay Here? Yes, but it would be at the bottom of my list. It's clean, but not comfortable in my opinion and I would not feel refreshed with a stay here.

Comments: The building dates back to 1832 and it is a former boarding house. There are 12 rooms altogether. The bedrooms I saw had very little maneuvering space. The parlors in the "two room suites" are also quite small. I think a guest would be very disappointed to see a very old little 13 inch TV in their room. All of the televisions I saw were modern 13 inchers except for that one old set. Definitely more than 15 years old and likely more than 20 years old (I previously was a consumer electronics salesman a long time ago).

I had trouble getting in to see the facility. It took several visits. Guests receive a key to the building after they arrive, so they can come and go as they please.

I hate to say it but I'm kind of down on this hotel. There are many other places in this city I would rather stay at.
