Street Address: 1800 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA 19103

Rates: $129 to $265. Varies.

Location Rating: Center of the city where the skyscrapers are. City Hall is close. You can walk to Rittenhouse Square Park in a few minutes.

Lobby Appearance: Attractive, recently updated lobby with marble floors and medium-dark woods. Comfortable hang-out area by a gas fireplace with bookcases and books. Front desk staff have a polished look. Interesting, attractive areas to eat off the lobby.

Room Appearance: They say half the rooms were renovated 6 months ago and the rest of them will be finished in February 2005. Nobody was available to open some doors for me during my visit.

Useful Nearby Businesses: Starbucks is across the street.

Hotel Restaurants: "Cafe Express" looks sort of classy. You can get baked goods, ice cream, cappuccino and espresso. I was impressed with the "Elephant & Castle Pub & Restaurant." There are multiple different rooms. You can sit by the bar, along a window with a view to the sidewalk, or in a cozy corner somewhere. I liked the atmosphere. Both of these eateries can be entered on the lobby floor.

Other Amenities: Garage parking. It is $28 for up to 24 hours. (Yow!) On the 8th floor they have a 24 hour fitness center. I don't know how big or small it is? An outdoor pool is open during the warm months.

Would I Stay Here? Probably. It looks like a good facility. The location is pretty good. I would be glad to eat in their restaurant.

Comments: The hotel has 445 rooms. About two and a half floors are set aside for smokers. Pets are not welcome. The subway entrance (metro) is at the other end of the block. It looks like a nice place. Maybe I'll go back to see the rooms. I'm getting tired of visiting hotels in Philly and not coming away with a successful visit.
