Oktiabrskaya Hotel

Excellent location. No website.
St. Petersburg, Russia Email: hotel@spb.cityline.ru Rates: Single 1798.50 rubles ($59.93); double 2946 rubles ($98.20); three room apartment for 2 people 6730.50 rubles ($224.35); luxury suite 4168.50 rubles ($138.95). Prices include breakfast. Location Rating: Excellent. Proximity to Metro: Excellent. Just walk right across the street to Ploshchad Vosstaniya Metro Station. The train to Moscow is also right across the street. Lobby Appearance: It's not spectacular, but it's okay. Big. Clean. But the lobby furniture is old. Room Appearance: The double room we saw was clean and basic. The carpets needed shampooing or replacement. But overall it was okay. Useful Nearby Businesses: Being located in the heart of the city, everything is here. One of Tanya's favorite cafes is a short stroll away: Koshkin Dom. I had a delicious grilled fish dish there. On this afternoon our meal (for two) cost 270 rubles ($9). Hotel Restaurants: They have a couple restaurants and bars. None of them struck me as fancy. Other Amenities: The currency exchange rate at this hotel was competitive. They have billiards, and internet access in their business center. The business center is in a newer section of the building and unfortunately they were closed because of the holiday (Orthodox Christmas). Would I stay here? Yes, because of the location. Staff Speaks English? Yes. Comments: The location in combination with the room pricing and general cleanliness makes this hotel among the best values among the large "heart of the city" hotels. It is a big and old hotel that has recently undergone some renovation work. It is not on the same level with the elite hotels or the Best Western, but it is acceptable and the location is excellent. A better deal is a room in their branch... see the next review. Feedback from a former guest: Hi,
Oktiabrskaya Hotel was one we stayed at in August of 2000. Was not impressed
with it at all. We were on the street side rooms and the train station noise
was horrible. When that noise stopped, the street sweepers showed up. Three
night of zero sleep. Our friends were on the inside rooms and they got bed
bugs!
Thanks,
Donna
Update: March 31, 2004 The city just auctioned off their stake in this hotel for $49 million. The price includes the branch location. New money will be coming into the main building to update the rooms. Tue, 06 Sep 2005 10:13:26 -0400 Hi!! We stayed at the Oktiabrskaya Hotel in late Aug 2005. It was completely renovated. Very nice. The road noise was a bit much with the windows open. The A/C was not running yet, so they provided a fan. Worthy of a stay and the food at the 4th floor cafe was GREAT and CHEAP. Scott Thu, 16 Feb 2006 14:51:16 -0800 Hi this is my assessment for the hotel that I stayed for 1 week in October 2004. I stayed at the Oktiabrskaya Hotel during the fall of 2004. It was really conveniently located across the street from the metro station. It was also on a main thoroughfare of great shopping and we walked everywhere. I can say that I was not impressed by the beds as they were uncomfortable but it was cheap and certainly that helped a lot. The staff spoke English and were nice enough for the most part. I think that a lot of foreigners travel to other countries with expectations that they are in their homes and they need to leave that behind. Are there nicer hotels? Certainly. But this is not bad if you want an inexpensive place in a good location. Otherwise spend a lot more money. Personally I think I would rather find a nicer place to stay, but this was not terrible. I got used to it quick enough and it was relatively clean. I would consider it again for the cost and convenience. Peter
