Kiev, Ukraine Phone: 380-44-524-9646 email: hotelmir@ukrnet.net Street Address: 70, Golosiivsky Prospect Rates: from $36! And that is a good room! Location Rating: Not near the center. Proximity To Metro: In 2007, a new metro station will open immediately next door. Right now it is 3 bus stops away from the nearest metro. Lobby Appearance: There are two buildings. The business-class building's lobby has been recently updated while some older details remain. Room Appearance: First let me tell you about room #805. It is Ukrainian style with pinewood furniture and wood floor with an eating area. It is a fun unique room, and they only have on in the entire hotel. It goes for $220. On the ninth floor I saw a business class standard single. Room #904 is nice yet small with a tight bathroom. It's got a 13 inch TV and it goes for $73. Room #911 is a superior single. It is roomier, has a 19 inch TV and goes for $85. Then I saw room #316 in the tourist class building. The corridors in this building are not as nice as the business class section. Room #316 had a brand new bathroom, new 13 inch TV, new carpet, new everything, and 2 single beds with a balcony! The price? Just $36! What a deal. Useful Nearby Businesses: A lake is across the street with paddleboat rental available. Hotel Restaurants: In the tourist class building they have a small restaurant with a Ukrainian theme in one section and a European theme in the other section. Our host Lydia says the food is "very good" and that they have a repeat group of Canadians who stay in the business class section, but go to his restaurant in the tourist class section because it is so good. In the business class section, they have a small, cozy cafe with 7 tables on the 6th floor. They also have a restaurant in his section which I did not see. Other Amenities: Really nice Russian billiards hall. Until 5pm it is just $4 an hour. It doubles after 5pm. But American pool is $7 an hour after 5. They have only one American pool table. The fitness center has one universal machine and a cheap walking machine, plus 6 dumbbells. They have a slot machine area. And a striptease bar. A cash machine is in the lobby. You can also buy a coat in the lobby, booze, magazines. You can buy train tickets and exchange currency. Would I stay here? Yes. Staff speaks English? Yes, but they prefer to speak their language. Comments: We were shown the hotel by one of the nicest people I've ever met (Lydia). She proclaimed "We are very friendly and we love our guests." She also says they serve guests from countries all over the world. We were treated very, very well here. I met the director. He was gracious. They have the service attitude and quality appears to be important here. The building dates back to 1975, but they are constantly updating it. Lydia "bent over backwards" to make sure we had a good visit, and she succeeded. We were very comfortable there. About the cheap rooms, the $36 room has no phone or refrigerator, but everything else is the same quality. A fourth floor tourist class room with a phone is $52. Across the street is a nice lake with ducks and paddle boats. I'll bet there is an eatery along the water in the warmer months.
