Phone: +380-44-279-49-14Kozatsky Hotel - Kiev, Ukraine (Hotel is under the red "Korona" sign.)

Street Address: 1/3 Mykhailivska Street

email: kozatsky@ukrnet.net

* Cheap price for excellent location *

Rates: From $40 on the weekends for a plain single to $130 for a "delux senior" room during the slightly more expensive weekday time slot.

Location Rating: Excellent. In the heart of the city with great views of Independence Square. Many interesting architectural sights surround this location.

Proximity To Metro: Maidan Nezalezhnosti - 5 to 7 minute walk.

Lobby Appearance: Old.

Room Appearance: Front desk refused to show them because "they are in a reconstruction process."

Useful Nearby Businesses: McDonald's is just steps away, and the Globus shopping mall is in the square underground. It is quite a nice mall.

Hotel Restaurants: They have a small 2 room restaurant (Restaurant Kazatsky) with no windows that first opened in May 2005. It is clean and modern. Management plans to update the design already.

Other Amenities: Hmm... I don't recall any.

Would I Stay Here? I'm not sure. I didn't get to see a room. The rooms in the hotel brochure look very good. But seeing the corridors and stairwells gives me pause for concern. They told me the rooms were last updated 7 or 8 years ago. The corridors were old and tired-looking. The carpets in the corridors were wrinkled. The ceilings on the guest floors are low. The location is excellent though and for the money, there is value. It is definitely an old Soviet-era hotel. I think if I were a budget traveller with a tolerance for staying in lesser quality hotels, then yes I would stay here for its excellent heart-of-the-city location and pricing.

Staff Speaks English? Front desk did not. An administrator on the 5th floor did.

Comments: This is a state enterprise owned by the minister of defense, or the minister of interior, depending upon who you ask. The Kozatsky Hotel has 130 rooms. If I were to stay here, I would ask for a room with a view of Independence Square on one of the upper floors. Because the view is quite interesting and architecturally attractive with a constant buzz of people action below. My guide Hanna describes this hotel as being 2½ star quality.

I've just got back from a 3 night stay at the Kozatsky hotel in Kiev, thought you may appreciate some feed back to add to your site.

I have some pics of the room/view as well if you are interested.

Reception not too bad, nice and clean

Only 1 of the 3 lifts seemed to take you to the top floors

7th floor brick balcony - lower ones are all bars, so you can see more

6th floor to collect the key, looked nicer (although still dark)

They spoke a little English on reception

Breakfast hot if you are there at 7am, otherwise it goes cold quickly

Sink was blocked on arrival, they did clear it eventually when they found a man with a plunger

All the corridors were dark, and really needed updating.

Shower was good and powerful, with plenty of hot water buy they only provided soap and plenty towels, no shampoo or other toiletries.

Room wasn’t services on Sunday, lack of sheets on the beds (one to lie on, and use the main bed cover as the second).

Plugs missing from the sink and bath though, so you couldn’t fill them with hot water for a wash/bath, just had to leave the water running.

Two single beds in the premium rooms were terrible, they really needed new mattresses, so much so that for the 2nd and 3rd nights I pulled out the sofa bed in the lounge area, and it was MUCH more comfortable (as I don’t think anyone had actually used it as a bed before)

Would I stay there again? No, probably not.  If you are going for the view, then you wont get much better, but apart from that, I don’t think I would stay there a second time. If they spent some money, cleaned and painted the place, improved the furniture, they could do so much better. It such a nice location, that they spoil with lack of investment.

Reviews for Kiev hotels were done in October and November 2005 by Ed Ryder. Room pricing should not be relied upon as accurate since rates change for various reasons including strong demand and inflation, and where rates have been provided, it is only meant to serve as a guide and all pricing should be verified with the hotel.
