Hotel Smolneenskya J (No website.) St. Petersburg, Russia Phone: 7 (812) 276-1099 Rates: Single $60; double $72; half luxury $96; luxury $120. Location Rating: Good. This hotel is outside of the city's core area, but the governor's palace is right across the street, the British embassy and a Leningrad Oblast government building is also right there, so it is considered a very safe area. Also, the very impressive and architecturally unique Smolney Cathedral is there. Proximity to Metro: Poor. It is a hike. Maybe 25 minutes walking time. Lobby Appearance: Clean.
Room Appearance: Not bad. A little dated. But very clean. Similar to the Hotel Mercury. Useful Nearby Businesses. You can find snack shops nearby. Hotel Restaurants: They have a comfortable bar area downstairs and one restaurant. During our visit, a private event was taking place at the restaurant and we didn't get a look at it. Other Amenities: It is a hidden hotel with only the smallest signage outside. Would I Stay Here? Yes. The room decor is a little dated. But everything is kept very clean and you can tell it is a place of quality. Staff Speaks English? I was told Yes. Comments: This is another government owned hotel, but larger than it's counterpart the Mercury. It was formally used only by government people. I liked the corridors of this 160 room hotel. They have brand new elevators and an indoor garden is hidden behind the large door to luxury suite 201. Our hotel guide was very proud of his hotel and said because it is owned by the city, the facility is well maintained. PS. In our photo, the hotel is not the entire building. Rather, its entrance is on the corner and the only signage is a small plaque on the wall.
