Hotel Rossiya   L h     St. Petersburg, Russia     Phone 7 (812) 329-3909

Rates: Standard single 800 rubles ($26.67); standard double 1300 rubles ($43.33); updated single 1450 rubles ($48.33); upgraded double 2400 to 2700 rubles ($80 to $90); semi-suite 2800 rubles ($93.33); suite 4000 rubles $133.33; apartment 5000 rubles ($166.67); extra bed 350 rubles ($11.67).

Location Rating: Fair. It is far from the heart of the city, yet near a busy section with lots of shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, McDonald's and a large park with a lake.Photo: Hotel Rossiya, St. Petersburg, Russia. I was so unimpressed with this hotel.

Proximity to Metro: Good. About a 10 minute walk. Park Pobedy Metro Station.

Lobby Appearance: Fairly new. The nicest part of the hotel.

Room Appearance: This is an old hotel. And the older rooms are depressing. Unfortunately,
updated rooms are also depressing. I did not like the wood flooring in the rooms and Tanya felt the rooms did not have good lighting. The corridors are also not impressive, especially in the older section. Yikes!

Useful Nearby Businesses: There is a lot nearby. We enjoyed lunch at Bistro Barracuda. It is a very nice, clean, new-looking cafe and it's very close to the hotel. My salmon dish was excellent. For two people the cost was a little over $8 for a high quality meal.

Hotel Restaurants: The hotel restaurant I saw did not look appealing to me, and I didn't like the atmosphere.

Other Amenities: Internet access only 60 rubles ($2) per hour. That makes them the lowest cost provider among Saint Petersburg hotels for internet access. There is a souvenir shop, a place to make excursion purchases, and a currency exchange place.

Would I Stay Here? I would prefer not to.

Staff Speaks English? The people I met at the hotel had too much difficulty speaking English.

Comments: This is a big hotel with 400 rooms. A large park with a lake is across the street. Also there is a playground area that children enjoy. Tanya says it is a pleasant place to walk in the summer. Many businesses are nearby. The metro is a short walk away. But this hotel is not close to the heart of the city. I would guess it is 9 miles away. Although the neighborhood is kind of interesting, I recommend against staying at the Hotel Rossiya. It is just not nice enough. Their advertising gives the illusion it is a decent place. Let me warn you that the chances are probably very good that you'll be disappointed if you are expecting to find the Rossiya to be a nice place.
