====================================================================
We are
looking for reviews that provide useful, detailed insights that will help other
intelligent travellers. We need to have the facts and your opinion.
Mainly,
it will be helpful to know about the quality of the facility, the desirability
of its location, and whether the staff has a good customer service attitude.
If you
really like a hotel or bed & breakfast, try not to write a review that is overly
giddy with lots of exclamation points. On the other hand, if a hotel is not
good, write objectively, be fair yet accurate. If they truly deserve to be
slammed, then go for it.
There are two techniques to visiting a hotel to
do a review. The most common method is to stay at a hotel and to learn all about
it through being a guest there. The other method is to simply walk up to the
front desk of a hotel, say that you are writing hotel reviews and would like to
see their different categories of rooms and have a general facility tour.
You
need to acquire firsthand knowledge of what the rooms are like.
You can't guess or make it up. Knowing the quality of the rooms is essential,
because some hotels have beautiful lobbies and crappy rooms and corridors.
Below are ideas on the details that should fall
under your scrutiny. You don't need to write about all of them. It is merely a
list intended to help you come up with enough material to write an adequate
review.
Among the things you need to get insights about are:
- the quality of the facility
- the desirability of the location
- the professionalism of the hotel staff
- the level and quality of the amenities
- the ambience of the interior spaces
- the cleanliness
- the level of comfort an ordinary traveller would probably feel at this hotel
and in their rooms
- security measures. How secure is this hotel? Can anyone walk the corridors or
are keycards required to use the elevator or gain access to the floors? Do the
rooms have safes? Can a laptop computer fit into the safe and can the laptop be
charged in the safe?
- whether the hotel is suitable for disabled travellers. Do they have rooms
especially for disabled people? Are there ramps for wheel chair access into the
building, or just steps?
- do they have non-smoking rooms? How many rooms are set aside for smokers?
- do they have an elevator? Do they have enough elevators? Or are there long
wait times?
- if there were a fire, are there easy ways for people to get out?
- do they have high speed internet access in the rooms? Or do they have any kind
of internet access available in the hotel so that people can check their email?
Is it free? If not, how much?
- do they have air conditioning?
- are there screens on the windows? Or will the guest be at risk for mosquito
bites in the summer?
- do they have a fitness center? Ask to see it. Is it a small room with 3 pieces
of equipment or is it a real fitness center?
- do they have a pool? A sauna? Indoors or outdoors?
- what about restaurants, cafes and bars? Do they have nice places for the guest
to relax and have a meal?
- what additional charges might a traveller see on their hotel bill? Are there
additional taxes? How much?
- what is the lobby like? What is your initial impression of this hotel and did
that impression change when you walked the corridors and saw the rooms?
- did you notice any unusual odors anywhere?
- did you see any dirt anywhere?
- what is special about this hotel?
- when did it open?
- how many rooms do they have?
- what is their website address and email?
- how close is it to public transportation?
- what sites of interests are nearby?
- are there any interesting places near the hotel? Shops? Restaurants? Parks?
Beautiful views?
- is this a noisy location? Or is it quiet?
- do you feel safe in this neighborhood?
- would you stay there (again)? How do you feel about this hotel? Does it feel
comfortable? Do you like the people? Is it an ideal location for tourists? Is it
expensive? Cheap? A good value? A great place to call home for a few days?
- if it was important for a guest to have a good workout, would you recommend
this hotel?
- is there anything fun to do nearby?
- as you enter each guest room, take a good look at the bathrooms. Look at the
ceiling. Is any paint flaking off? Do you see any mold? Look on the floor. Do
you see any hair anywhere? Is it a nice bathroom with good lighting? Is it
modern? Is it attractive?
- the room must be clean. Is there dust that you can easily see. Has the floor
been vacuumed or swept? Is the comforter or quilt (on the bed) perfectly clean?
How is the view out the windows? What kind of art is on the walls? What do you
see? Do you like the interior design?
- do they have a fish tank in the lobby? Is it perfectly clean?
- are they keeping any pets in the lobby? Like a dog or anything?
- how does this hotel compare to the other hotels in this neighborhood?
- do they have a children's play area anywhere?
- will it be easy to cross the street? Or dangerous due to a large number of
speeding cars?
- does their brochure or promotional literature paint an accurate picture of the
hotel, or are they stretching the truth?
These are some of the questions and issues to consider when visiting a hotel.
You don't need to write about all of these things in the review, but you should
be able to come up with a piece that will be useful for the website visitors.
You could create a form to remind you about important facts to get during
your visit:
- hotel name
- hotel address
- hotel phone number
- website
- what price range are rooms priced between?
- number of rooms
- number of floors
- elevator... yes or no?
- handicap accessible
- how many rooms are set aside for non-smokers?
- age of building
- year the hotel opened
- when were the rooms last updated?
- when was the last major renovation of the hotel?
- is the staff fluent in English?
- do they have a restaurant, bar or cafe?
- is there a fitness center? And is it substantial or just a few machines in a
small room?
- indoor pool? Outdoor pool? Hot tub?
- air conditioning?
- screens on windows?
- water views?
- views of interesting city areas?
- breakfast included?
- internet access?
- guest laundry facilities (like a washer and dryer)?
- how much extra for a child or a third person to stay in a room?
- is airport transportation offered? Is it free?
- is there room service? Is it 24 hour room service?
- do they have a game room or a tennis court or other recreational facilities?
- size of television. Is it a modern television?
- does the television have any English language channels?
- in-room safe? Can it fit a laptop computer? Can the battery be recharged while
the lap top is in the safe? (Some hotels have this feature.)
- iron and ironing board?
- hair dryer?
- kitchen in the guest room? Refrigerator?
- internet access in the room?
- do they have wireless internet access?
- coffee maker in the room?
- is the location of the hotel noisy or quiet?
- what is the nearest metro station?
- what do you think of the neighborhood?
- are there any interesting shops or restaurants in the neighborhood? What are
their names?
- were you comfortable at this hotel?
These are some ideas about what information to collect.
