Would I Stay Here? No. There are better facilities right across the street, and they know how to treat customers.
What's funny about the Baikal is that they have such a jazzy entryway. Beyond the lobby, this place is a dump.
The front desk was uncooperative during my 3/28/2004 visit. Two co-workers of hers were sitting there having a conversation doing nothing of business importance as far as we could tell. I was sneaky and made it beyond the card-key controlled lobby. Then I understood why they would not show me the rooms... they are too embarrassed and ashamed of their hotel to show it to me! The corridors I saw were poor with beat carpets in need of replacement. I also saw a few open doors to guest rooms. The rooms were old, plain and basic. They had a good Russian billiards room. The cafe was so-so. There is a small cafe. My assistant Marina noticed an odor in the hotel that she described as a mixture of "toilet plus cigarette smoke." I didn't notice it.
The Baikal has two much more capable competitors right across the street. If you want to stay in this neighborhood, then consider either the Oochebnaya Hotel or the Hotel Tourist.
